One Eighty Light

At Tuesday's RIBA Awards evening, Dover Esplanade won the South East project Award, designed by Tonkin Liu Architects utilising all iGuzzini products. The Dover seafront has been transformed by artworks that take the form of three waves that gently wash up against the sheltered beach.

The Lifting Wave is a repeating form of curving white concrete ramps and staircases that rise and fall to connect the Esplanade to the lower shingle beach. The Resting Wave; a second sculptural white concrete wall made up of a series of moulded curves with recesses that house oak benches, while the promontories house raised lawns.

The third line is the lighting wave. The lighting columns rise and fall like froth on the bubbling crest of a wave. These deceptive effortless interventions lend this shore line to a true sense of form, and a place for of fun. This lighting feature includes floodlights to shine on the Lifting Wave and medium spot lights focused on the Resting Wave, finally mini spot lights to illuminate the decorative "froth" a top the white columns.

The firm's Lifting Wave, Resting Wave, Lighting Wave project was also the winning design in a competition organised by the Landscape Institute for a collection of clients which include the Dover Harbour Board, the district council and English Heritage.

The £2 Million project, which has been part funded by Cabe's now defunct sea Change programme, creates a 3500sq m promenade that connect the towns Eastern and Western docks.
